“KIDS, BUILD A BOX CITY!”

Help build a city and learn how cities are planned, or unplanned; what makes a quality city; and how citizens (yes, kids too!) can participate in the improvement of the built environment.

Volunteers would be supervising the activity where kids and parents/guardians build a city with various craft supplies provided by the Undergrad Advising Office.

Hi Everyone!

We're really excited to announce that our last BUSSA event of this semester will be a Gingerbread City-Making Competition on Thursday, Dec 6 @ 7pm in the 2nd floor lobby of Wurster. Yup, think all the fun of gingerbread-house making, but even CRAZIER. Better yet, we've invited Cal's AIAS (American Institute of Architecture Students) club as well so that we can have both planners and architects on each team to create that much better of a city!

No need to form a team, just show up and we'll split people into teams. Be ready to meet new people! And as the grand prize, the winning team gets to have their gingerbread creation displayed in Wurster in a nifty glass architectural display box. We'll also be announcing new BUSSA officers for the next calendar year, so you'll have an opportunity to hear about plans for next semester as well as voice any ideas you may want to see happen.

So come by for some free holiday fun + yummy hot chocolate!

The Breslauer Graduate Student Symposium is an annual conference comprised primarily of U. C. Berkeley graduate students on an internationally relevant theme. The goal of the symposium is to support graduate student research on international issues related to the pursuit of solutions to real-world problems. The symposium was established in 2001, and is made possible by a campus donor in honor of George Breslauer, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost of the University of California at Berkeley.

The focus of the 2006 Breslauer Symposium is on the Right to the City and the Politics of Space. This interdisciplinary conference brings together graduate students who are researching struggles for shelter and livelihood, competing claims to land, and politics of space from a range of disciplinary perspectives and methodological approaches. It also seeks to cut across the often-divided analytical and geopolitical domains of First and Third Worlds, bringing together those working within the Global South and those working within the Euro-American context.

We are pleased to announce that this year’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Don Mitchell, Chair of the Geography Department at Syracuse University. Professor Mitchell is well known for his work on the historical production of landscapes as they relate to workers and the working class, the relationship between culture and power, and the production and meaning of public space. His groundbreaking book, The Right to the City: Social Justice and the Fight for Public Space (2003), explores the struggles over public space in American cities and the modes of control that have led to the marginalization of the homeless.

The 2006 Breslauer Symposium will take place on Friday, April 14^th and Saturday, April 15^th in The Geballe Room of the Townsend Center for the Humanities, located at 220 Stephens Hall on the University of California at Berkeley Campus. The symposium is free and open to the public.

Hey Guys,

If anyone still wants to attend the UC Transportation Center Student Conference (http://www.uctc.net/studentconference/) this thursday 2/9 through saturday 2/11, which features a bicycle tour of Berkeley's Bicycle Blvd that goes to the Marina, you still can, even though registration has formally been closed. James Rubin (jcrubin@berkeley.edu), a doctoral student with UCTC announced in CP114 that people can probably still attend if they talk to him . Also, I work at UCTC and I think they'd be really excited about more undergraduate interest in the conference. That about it. Hope all is well!

Urban Outing on Saturday, Nov. 5

BUSSA is holding their semesterly "urban outing" this Saturday, November 5, in San Francisco. We will be taking the Chinatown Alleyway Tour which is led by youth who live or have lived in Chinatown. The tour costs $10 with student ID and the proceeds benefit the community. Afterwards we will be eating a yummy lunch in Chinatown. This is a great opportunity for everyone, whether you've never been to Chinatown or you've been a hundred times. This area of SF is a diverse and vibrant neighborhood where there are always new things to discover. The entire event will last from about 9am to 3pm. More details are available at the end of this message.

I hope to see you at this very special event. You do not have to be in BUSSA to participate, so bring your friends! Bring about $20 for the tour and lunch and don't forget your student ID. If you are interested in attending please email me so I can know how many people to expect. Please email me with any questions you may have.

Dear DCRP Students:

Please mark your calendars for the Comparative Urban Development faculty candidate lectures and student meetings. As the candidates’ schedules are quite full, the brownbag lunch meetings will include MCP students and Urban Studies Major students*.

Doctoral students will have a separate meeting with each candidate. I would like to encourage all students to attend the lectures and participate in the meetings in order for the candidates to feel most welcome.

Please note that the lectures will start on “Berkeley” time, 10 minutes past the announced hour.

URBAN OUTING - SILENT FILMS & SAN JOSE
Downtown San Jo

Last fall, the historic Fox California Theatre in Downtown San Jose was reopened after nearly 30 years of abandonment. The theatre has been completely restored by the Packard Foundation, and will be showing a double feature of classic silent films (with an awesome live organist playing the whole time) as part of the Cinequest Film Festival.

On Friday afternoon we're going to head down to San Jose for our first urban outing this semester. We'll start with a short walking tour of all the redevelopment/restoration going on Downtown, head to dinner, and go to the showing of Carmen and La Boheme at 7:30.

So if you've:

a) never been to Downtown San Jose
b) never seen a silent movie
c) never seen a movie in a classic "movie palace"
d) all of the above

You MUST come to this event! It will be tons of fun.

Please let Nick know ASAP (nap98@aol.com ) whether you think you want to go, and what time you can leave Berkeley so we can set up carpools down to the Silicon Valley.

Also, Nick may be able to get discounted tickets since he worked at the Packard Foundation's historic Stanford Theatre (yes,Stanfurd. booo....hisss, etc. The California Theatre is bigger and better, so, go bears). So if you let him know you plan on coming, he may be able to get you tickets that cost less than the already measly $10 ticket price.

First General Meeting!

Welcome back everyone!

BUSSA will be holding our first general meeting of the semester next Thursday. The meeting will start at 6:30, right after ED100.

This meeting will be an informal mixer, a chance to meet fellow Urban Studies majors and City Planning minors, as well as the BUSSA officers. We'll also do a brief run-down of all the activities that we're planning for this semester, so this is your chance to get involved!

Also: those of you that are Urban Studies majors, we will be taking pictures for the undergraduate face board, so remember to look snazy (at least from the head up).

And finally, food! No cheesy sticks this time, but instead we'll have ICE CREAM and homemade BROWNIES from BUSSA co-coordinator Carmen Oleksinski.

Attention Urban Studies Majors!

Ever notice how on the second floor of Wurster, there's that wall called the "DCRP Dream Team" with the smiling faces of all your City Planning GSIs on it? Ever wonder why us US Majors aren't a part of this dream team?

Well that's because our OWN face board is going to be put up across the hall. BUSSA is working with the DCRP staff to complete the board. If you haven't had your picture taken yet for the face board, please come to the meeting on Wednesday for us to snap a photo of you, even if you only have time to drop by for the photo.

2005 T-Shirt Design

We're going to order new T-shirts next semester. You've got all of winter break to think up an interesting design. We will vote on them at the beginning of Spring Semester.

As always, there will be food and drink at the meeting. So come on by!

Now....some additional info on the officer positions:
These positions are flexible, and there is lots of overlap between roles. BUSSA officers share responsibilities and help each other out. The only requirement is regular attendance at officer meetings, which are held once a month. The officer committee is an informal group and anyone interested in attending these meetings (whether elected to an officer position or not) is welcome! Just let us know and we'll include you on the officer mailing list.

Here are the open positions:

(Co) Coordinator
Length: Two Semesters; Spring 05 and Fall 05
Duties: Keep BUSSA goin strong! BUSSA has two coordinators whose annual terms are staggered to help ensure group continuity. Our club's founding member, Mike Lim, will be graduating this semester and we're looking for an enthusiastic and responsible individual to work with our returning coordinator, Nick Perry, to plan and run meetings/events next semester and lead the group in to the Fall 2005 semester.

Secretary
Length: Spring 05
Duties: Takes and distributes meeting minutes, assists Publicity Officer with intra-group communication.

Publicity
Length: Spring 05
Duties: Help get the word out about our club and events. BUSSA's booster person; exercise your design skills and figure out new ways to publicize BUSSA. Coordinate with other group members to create and post flyers, banners, etc.

Historian
Length: Spring 05
Duties: Document BUSSA events through photography, web-design, or blogging.

Treasurer
Length: Spring 05
Duties: Work with the Coordinators, ASUC, and Faculty advisors to secure funding for club activities. Maintain club budget.

Urban Outing - Oakland: THIS SATURDAY (Oct 2):

BUSSA's first Urban Outing will take us to Downtown Oakland, an intriguing area for any student studying City Planning in the Bay Area. The main event will be a a tour of one of the best example of 'movie palace' and art-deco architecture in the country, the Paramount Theatre on Broadway. The tour starts at 10am and goes to 12pm. Tickets are only $1.

Hello Everyone!

Hope you are all enjoying the last few days of summer break!

Also, welcome to any new Urban Studies majors and City Planning minors who wandered over to our little blog from the DCRP's web site. We're hoping to get a real web site up this semester, but for now this will do.

For anyone interested in joining BUSSA this semester, or learning more about us please send an e-mail to nperry@berkeley.edu and we will add you to our e-mail list.

BUSSA reps will be at Thursday's DCRP Orientation at 12:00 to lead any new Urban Studies majors who want to join our lunch group. Anyone is free to join them to grab lunch somewhere on Southside. Just drop by Wurster around noon.

Also, on Friday two BUSSA reps will be at Friday's DCRP Peer Advising session at 106 Wurster from 2:30 to 4:30. Come drop by and say hi to Carmen and Nick.

In honor of our graduating seniors, BUSSA will have a potluck/party at
Mike's apt this Friday at 7:00pm. It will be a potluck so please sign up

HAVENS HOUSE TOUR - April 25, 2004

On Sunday, April 25, 2004 BUSSA members joined Architecture History Professor Kathleen James-Chakraborty and a few Architecture170b students for a tour of the historic Weston Havens House.

Located on Panoramic Way above the UC Berkeley campus, the house was built c.
1941 by architect Hamilton Harwell Harris (1903-1990). The Havens House is considered his masterpiece. Its unique use of inverted gables and dramatic geometric forms earned the house its reputation as one of the greatest examples of Modernist residential architecture. The house also offers stunning views of the San Francisco Bay and a beautiful courtyard. The University of California is currently in the process
of purchasing the house, and a restoration is planned.

Special thanks go out to BUSSA co-chair Kate Grindlay and Professor James-Chakraborty and our tour guide, Weston Haven's friend Sergio, for making this great event possible.

SF MOMA Trip

On Thursday, April 14th some of the members of BUSSA headed over to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to view a photographic exhibit on the last years of the town of Monticello, Ca, before it was destroyed to make way for Berryessa Resevoir. The photos were taken in 1956 by Dorothea Lange and Pirkle Jones.

After checking out the exhibit the group headed to the Mission District for some good burritos. Thanks to Rudy for planning the trip! Photos are below

Graduate Student-Undergraduate Student Mixer

With the promise of free pizza and drinks, dozens of City Planning Graduate Students, Urban Studies Majors, and City Planning Minors gathered together in the Wurster Lobby for DCRP's first Graduate-Undergraduate Mixer.
